2. The Present Continuous Tense
Kita sering mengungkapkan sesuatu yang sedang kita lakukan atau sesuatu itu sedang terjadi, baik ada hubungannya dengan kita ataupun tidak dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Keberlangsungan peristiwa atau kegiatan SEDANG itu kita nyatakan dalam tense ini. Bukan hanya itu, penggunaan tense tersebut dalam konteks lain pun disajikan di bawah ini.
Pola Kalimat:
(+) S + be (am/is/are) + V1 + ing + O/Adv.
(-) S + be + not + V1 + ing + O/Adv.
(?) Be + S +V1 + ing + O/Adv.
Fungsi dan Contoh:
i. The Present Continous Tense untuk mengungkapkan kegiatan atau keadaan yang sedang berlangsung pada saat sekarang.
- The doorbell is ringing.
- It is raining now.
- Why are you sitting at my desk?
- I am not wearing a coat as it isn’t cold.
- She is typing two letters now.
- Betty is sick. She’s lying in bed. She is not sleeping. Helen is looking out the window.
HELEN : I’m looking at yourfather. He is cooking hamburgers in the yard.
BETTY : Is Peter in the yard, too?
HELEN : Yes, he is. He’s playing with Alan.
BETTY : Can you see Elena?
HELEN : No, I can’t. Oh, wait a minute! Yes, I can. She‘s standing behind the bush.
BETTY : What’s she doing?
HELEN : She‘s laughing at the dog.
BETTY : What’s the dog doing?
HELEN : He’s barking at Tom. Tom has the dog’s stick.
BETTY : Where’s Luis? Is he playing, too?
HELEN : Oh, no. Lying under the tree. He’s reading!
ii. untuk mengungkapkan sesuatu yang sedang terjadi di sekitar waktu sekarang.
Tom and Ann are talking and drinking in a café.
- Tom say : ‘I’m reading an interesting book at the moment. I’II lend it to you when I’ve finished it.’
- Silvia is learning English at the moment. The boy is painting the house at the moment.
iii. untuk membicarakan tentang keadaan yang berubah-ubah.
- The population of the world is rising very fast.
- Is your English getting better?
- The stocks are falling down rapidly at the stock market.
iv. untuk menyatakan pengulangan suatu tindakan yang sama.
- The economic situation is already very bad and it is becoming worse.
- 'You’re working hard today.’ ’Yes, I have a lot to do.’
- I’m seeing my boss all these days.
- John is always making trouble.
v. untuk menyatakan tindakan yang akan atau terpaksa dilakukan (FUTURE meaning).
- They are leaving from Bali next week. She is going to have a difficult year.
- A : Are you doing anything tomorrow afternoon?
- B : Yes, I’m playing tennis with Ann.
A : Are you playing football tomorrow?
- B : Yes, but Tom isn’t playing. He has hurt his leg.
- B : Oh, is she ? What time is she arriving?
- B : Are you meeting her at the station?
